Service - GRI Reporting

GRI Reporting Services

Sustainability reporting using GRI Standards 2021 - from materiality assessment to publication.

Why GRI?

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) provides the world's most widely used sustainability reporting standards. Over 10,000 organizations globally use GRI to disclose their environmental, social, and governance impacts in a structured, comparable format.

Investors, ESG rating agencies, and stakeholders recognize GRI as the benchmark for sustainability reporting. GRI reports demonstrate transparency, build trust with capital markets, and satisfy the disclosure expectations of customers, regulators, and civil society. For Indian companies navigating BRSR, CSRD, and CDP requirements, GRI provides a robust foundation that maps across multiple frameworks.

GRI Universal Standards (2021)

The 2021 revision of the GRI Universal Standards introduced significant changes that apply to all organizations reporting under GRI. Understanding these three foundational standards is essential for compliant reporting.

GRI 1: Foundation - Sets out the purpose and system of GRI Standards, defines key concepts such as impact materiality, and establishes the requirements for reporting "in accordance" with GRI. This is the starting point for any GRI report.

GRI 2: General Disclosures - Requires disclosure about the organization itself: governance structure, strategy, policies, stakeholder engagement practices, and reporting practices. These disclosures provide context for all topic-specific data.

GRI 3: Material Topics - Defines the process for determining material topics, including impact assessment and stakeholder input. Organizations must disclose how they identified material topics, their list of material topics, and how they manage each one.

GRI + BRSR: Unified Reporting

Many Indian companies need to report under both GRI Standards and BRSR. The good news: there is significant overlap. Many BRSR KPIs map directly to GRI disclosures - energy consumption, emissions, water withdrawal, waste generation, workforce diversity, and community engagement data serve both frameworks.

We help organizations build a single, integrated data collection system that feeds both GRI and BRSR reports. This eliminates duplicate effort, ensures consistency across disclosures, and reduces the overall cost and time of sustainability reporting. For companies with EU exposure, GRI also maps well to TCFD climate disclosures and the EU CSRD requirements, making it an excellent foundation for a multi-framework reporting strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GRI reporting services does O₂log provide?
End-to-end GRI reporting: materiality assessment, stakeholder engagement, data collection for GRI 300/400/200 series, report writing, GRI Content Index preparation, external assurance coordination, and GRI database registration. We support both first-time reporters and organizations looking to improve existing reports.
Does O₂log support both "in accordance" and "with reference" reporting?
Yes. We help companies determine the appropriate level and prepare accordingly. "In accordance" requires all applicable disclosures for each material topic; "with reference" allows selective reporting of specific GRI Standards. We recommend the level that best matches your reporting maturity and stakeholder expectations.
How does GRI relate to BRSR?
GRI and BRSR overlap significantly. Many BRSR KPIs map to GRI Standards - energy, emissions, water, waste, workforce data. Companies doing both can use a single data collection system. We help build unified reporting frameworks that satisfy both requirements efficiently. Learn more in our BRSR reporting guide.
How long does GRI report preparation take?
First-time reports typically take 12-16 weeks, with the materiality assessment phase taking the longest. Subsequent years are faster - usually 6-8 weeks - with established data systems, templates, and baseline metrics already in place.
